The 526ce side split/neck heel repair is all done! I’m pretty pleased with how this turned out. It can be easy to get overwhelmed with a giant crack like that but sometimes they go back together really well. Also, you can’t really complain when the actual finish department is 100 yards away so I can run down there and get the legit stains we used in the first place when I was touching up the color.
Finished it up in the #plek with a fret dress and a new nut/saddle for the setup. She’s back with the owner and making music again.

There’s only a few ways to do something correctly, and a million ways to do it wrong. This one baffled us: this guitar came in with no load bearing wraps around the post, so all of the string tension was focused on one kink coming out of the tuner hole, with the excess string wrapped around the tuner. This was extremely unstable, and every string broke right at the kink as we removed them. We’re sure what the thought process was here, but we’re not here to judge, just to correct and instruct.
Strings should have around 2-3 windings around the tuner post, with the speaking section of the string coming from the lowest point. This spreads the string tension around the post, and increases the downward pressure on the nut, all of which helps stabilize the string. The second photo is an example of how we wind our strings: first wind over the excess, the rest of the winds below. This locks the string without requiring complicated knots that make string changing a pain. It takes practice to get it right, but since you’re changing your strings once a month you’re getting plenty of practice, right? Right?

Repair post time! Some of you have probably seen my stories about this one the last few days. This is a 20 year old 500 series that obviously took a hell of a hit to end up like this. The treble side is split from inside the cutaway all the way to the tail block. The neck heel broke in two. And it had 3 big top cracks.
First up I epoxied the heel back together. Next I dry clamped all the side splits and wicked in some thin CA to glue it back together. I spent the next day doing touchups to chipouts in the finish and sealing the length of the crack before sanding it all level and spraying a spot finish over the repaired area.
This will be a multi part post about the total job, so check back for more. Next up we work on touching up that neck heel. The goal is to level everything without going through the color, otherwise the whole neck will need to be refinished
